Nigeria Volleyball Federation President, Musa Nimrod, Confident in Women’s Beach Volleyball Team’s Preparation for Paris 2024 Olympic Games Qualifiers
The Nigeria Volleyball Federation President, Musa Nimrod, expressed confidence in the country’s women’s beach volleyball team as they embark on preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers next month. The qualifiers are scheduled to take place in Morocco from June 19 to 23.
The Nigerian women’s beach volleyball team commenced their preparations last Friday, with nine players called up to the camp. Under the guidance of coach Kayode Ajilore, the invited players have begun training in earnest, aiming to secure the sole qualification spot from Africa.
Ahead of the qualifiers in Morocco, Nimrod expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to secure qualification for the tournament in Paris, highlighting the team’s near misses on two previous occasions.
The players have reported in camp and preparation for the only ticket in Africa has begun, he said.
This time around we are not going to play second fiddle because it is our desire to get the ticket. Weve always been playing second fiddle but enough is enough and that is why we are preparing the players ahead of time. We know that there are several challenges because these are young players. While some are writing their WAEC, we have others in the university, weve been talking to the families so that we will understand ourselves very well but preparation is on and by next week they will start their West African tour.
They will be going to Ghana, Lome, Cotonou and Badagry where their final camping will be. We are hopeful that this time around Nigeria will be taking part in the beach volleyball event at the Olympics.
Securing a bronze medal at the 13th African Games in Ghana earned the women’s beach volleyball team a spot in the qualifiers.
France, as the host nation, received an automatic qualification, leaving 24 spots available. Additionally, the United States, winners of the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships, have also secured a spot.
As per FIVB regulations, the victors of each continental confederation’s Olympic qualification events secure one spot each. Nigeria aims to clinch the available slot from Africa.
