Students of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, on Thursday, staged peaceful protest to demand the conduct of students’ union election.

The gate of the school’s permanent site was closed, denying staff and students access.

The protesting students demanded for students’ election before matriculation.

They also demanded that hostel fees should be optional and not mandatory, reduction of school fees, and kicked against chest x-ray, high cost of textbooks and sexual harassment.

Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Federal poly Offa branch, Dr Atilola Moses Idowu, confirmed the development.

He told DAILY POST in a phone chat on Thursday that the students had an issue with the management of the institution over students’ election matters.

“The major demand of the aggrieved students is the conduct of the students’ union government election and it will come when the students union is on ground, the matter will be tabled before the management for action.

“It is a minor issue but the students are not patient, I was with them for two hours to negotiate and pacify them as directed by the rector of the institution.

“The rector said I should go on with the negotiation with the students but they were adamant despite all strategies adopted.

“However, calm has been restored on the campus immediately the management directed the students to go home for the Easter celebrations,” Atilola added.
