The former PDP chieftain announced this in a press statement he issued on Friday, explaining that his decision was connected to the current situation in the party.

A former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Gerald Irona, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former PDP chieftain announced this in a press statement he issued on Friday, explaining that his decision was connected to the current situation in the party.

The letter which was addressed to the party''s National Chairman and State Acting Chairman reads: I write to resign my membership of the People''s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect. This decision, while undoubtedly difficult, was arrived at after deep personal reflection and extensive consultations with my family, esteemed leaders, devoted followers, unwavering supporters, benevolent well-wishers, and cherished allies.

My decision is informed by my dissatisfaction with the current situation of things in the Peoples Democratic Party. I regret that the party has deviated significantly from the noble principles established by its founding fathers.

I will forever remain grateful to the party for providing me with the platform and the opportunity to serve the esteemed citizens of Imo State, in particular and our great country, Nigeria, at large, in various capacities.

"Please accept the assurances of my best regards.

SaharaReporters had days ago reported that a former governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, tendered his resignation from the PDP over the lingering internal crisis in the party.

Ihedioha had tendered his resignation in a letter he personally signed, dated April 23, 2024 and addressed to his Mbutu Ward Chairman of PDP in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo state.

He had said that the party had taken on a path that was at variance with his personal beliefs, adding that despite his attempt to offer counsel, PDP was sadly, no longer able to carry out internal reforms, enforce its own rules or offer credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier said that the party would not be deterred by its internal crisis in watching the activities of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the policies of President Bola Tinubu.

This was stated by the partys National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba when he appeared on Arise News TV.
