One Soldier, Several Others Killed As Nigerian Troops Battle Gunmen In Anambra

A statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, which was shared on official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Nigerian Army, claimed the fighters launched a surprise attack on the troops who were engaged in internal security in the town.

 

 

 

 

The Nigerian Army has announced the killing of scores of alleged armed fighters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militia the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

 

 

A statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, which was shared on official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Nigerian Army, claimed the fighters launched a surprise attack on the troops who were engaged in internal security in the town.

 

 

According to the statement, the troops successfully repelled the attack, who were armed with AK-47 rifles and riding in two Lexus vehicles and motorbikes.

 

 

Although scores of the armed fighters were neutralised, the NA regretted that one soldier paid the supreme price with two others critically injured.

 

 

The statement partly read: "In a display of bravery and resilience, Nigerian Army troops have successfully repelled an attack by the armed fighters of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militia arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) , in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State. 

 

 

"The dissidents, armed with AK-47 rifles and riding in two Lexus vehicles and motorbikes, launched a surprise attack on the town, opening fire at troops engaged in internal security operations. 

 

 

"The troops swiftly and decisively responded and countered the attack, neutralizing unconfirmed numbers of the attackers, while others fled the scene with gunshot wounds, as traces of blood were seen along their escape route.

 

 

"Regrettably, one soldier paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, while two others sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical attention. 

 

 

"The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will continue to confront all threats to peace and stability in the region. 

 

 

"The bravery and dedication of our troops in the face of danger are testimonies of their unwavering commitment to protecting the people and communities."
