The management of Babcock University (BU) has confirmed the death of one of its senior lecturers, Prof Yinka Olomojobi, who was killed by suspected gunmen.
In a statement signed by the Director of Communication and Marketing, Dr Joshua Suleiman, the BU management announced the loss of Prof. Yinka Olomojobi, a professor of Human Rights Law and Gender Law, to suspected kidnappers.
Suleiman stated that the tragic incident occurred in Iperu town between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm on Friday, April 19, along the Iperu-Sagamu Road, 8 kilometres from the Ilisan-Remo campus, and 3 kilometres from the Iperu campus of Babcock University, Ogun State. According to him, the death of Prof Olomojobi at the hands of the suspected kidnappers came as a rude shock to the entire university community, which is now in mourning.
He revealed that the Nigeria Police is investigating this act of utmost savagery by the suspected kidnappers.
“The law enforcement agencies in conjunction with the Ogun State government are reportedly on the trail of the perpetrators and more men and women of the security agencies have been deployed to ensure the maximum safety of lives and property in the entire axis of the state,” the statement noted.
Suleiman mentioned that Prof Olomojobi began his career at Babcock University on April 1, 2011, and was a vibrant personality who dedicated himself to imparting knowledge and empowering the university’s students.
The law professor obtained his bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from the Ogun State University (1985-1990) and pursued his Master’s and Doctoral degree programs (2006–2010) at the University of Liverpool and Lancaster University, England, respectively.
He said, “The university commiserates with his family, friends, faculty, staff, and students at this time of grief and prays for God’s comfort and courage to bear the loss.”
Suleiman assured stakeholders—students, parents, the host community, faculty, and staff—that Babcock University would continue to collaborate with government security and local vigilance agencies to ensure the maximum protection of lives and property within and around the university environment.
He confirmed that the partnership with stakeholders over the years has yielded positive outcomes, and the university will continue to explore greater collaborative endeavours to ensure a safer learning and living space for all.
