PDP caucus backs Damagum to continue as acting national chairman

A caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lent its support to Umar Damagum to continue as the acting national chairman.

The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership tussle, with members urging the resignation of the Damagum-led National Executive Committee (NEC).

Damagun will, however, maintain his position as the party’s acting national chairman until
another NEC meeting takes place after that on Thursday, April 18.

Damagum’s continuation as acting national chairman is part of the resolutions the PDP reached at their caucus meeting on Wednesday night.

According to the PDP spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, the caucus resolved that all reconciliation committees of the party be reconstituted to resolve grievances affecting the unity of the party.

On the party’s chairmanship role, Ologunagba said it is an issue that will be sorted out by the NEC.

He said they would discuss it, adding that they resolved that Damagum will continue as the PDP’s acting chairman.

While the Nyesom Wike-led camp is rooting for Damagum to retain his seat as the PDP national chairman, the other camp, led by Atiku is pushing for the emergence of Senator Gabriel Suswam.

It was learnt that both camps have intensified efforts to ensure their loyalists from the North Central geopolitical zone emerge as Iyorchia Ayu’s replacement.
