Daniel Anjorin: Arsenal pays tribute to British-Nigerian killed in London attack

Arsenal Football Club has paid tribute to a 14-year-old British-Nigerian Daniel Anjorin, a devoted fan who was killed in a sword attack on his way to school on Tuesday.

Anjorin, a student at Bancroft’s School, was described as a “true scholar” with a “positive nature and gentle character” by the school in a statement.

“He was a true scholar, demonstrating commendable dedication to his academic pursuits. His positive nature and gentle character will leave a lasting impact on us,” Bancroft School said.

The deceased was reportedly a die-hard Arsenal fan, and the club honoured him during their Premier League match against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The Emirates Stadium paused for applause in the 14th minute of the game, with permission from Anjorin’s family.

Fans also held a banner reading “RIP Daniel” in a moving display of respect.

London’s Metropolitan Police have charged Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, a Spanish-Brazilian national, with Anjorin’s murder, along with attempted murder, grievous bodily harm, aggravated burglary, and possession of a bladed article.

The attack, which police said is not terror-related, also left two police officers and two other bystanders injured.

He was accused of attacking a 35-year-old man inside a nearby property, causing lacerations on his arm, before killing Anjorin.

Police arrived on the scene 12 minutes after the initial emergency call and attempted to neutralise the suspect with incapacitant spray and a Taser gun, but they had little effect.

The suspect is accused of seriously injuring two police officers, both of whom underwent surgery on Tuesday and remain hospitalised.

According to the Met, one woman sustained severe arm injuries and nearly lost her hand.

Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo then fled again as terrified witnesses sought refuge in houses, but police used a Taser to subdue him and detained him 22 minutes after the initial call.

Anjorin’s death is the second recent tragedy to strike Bancroft School, following the death of a former student, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, in Nottingham last year while attempting to save a friend from a knife attacker.
